Female Condoms to Fight the HIV Epidemic

Washington - Although the community had failed to be accepted, re-promoted female condoms in Washingoton DC. Another aim was to reduce HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Charlene Cotton will speak to anyone about sex. Several days a week, he stood behind a table adorned with a bowl of condoms in various flavors and pamphlets on safe sex. He greeted each woman passing by the road, "Come to my desk. Do not be afraid."

She then asked, "Did you hear about female condoms?"

Then, to show how it works, she took a teaching aid in the form of condoms and human anatomy models.

Conversations about this is actually quite awkward to do at the curb. But Cotton is not ashamed. She's part of an effort to promote the city of Washington DC female condom. Hopes, their involvement can help stop the spread of HIV in Washington, which has the highest infection rates in the U.S..

A group of community members also handed out 500 000 female condoms, flexible bag that is larger than the male condom but the same length, during the session of instruction in beauty salons, barbershops, churches and restaurants.

Female condoms sold in some drug stores in Columbia, though less in demand, but Washington is the only city that allows people can obtain condoms women outside the health clinic. City officials began to promote, such as through websites, posters, bus 460 which is the third of the city fleet.

Ad shows a pair of humans who were embraced by a woman holding a condom package. This promotion will last for three months. "With the female condom for her pleasure point. Come on, try it," insisted the ad.

The question is if the promotion took place effectively, it means that the women would use a condom?

This is an important question in Washington.

A study in 2009 found the facts about 3% of the city's population aged over 12 living with HIV or AIDS. It was a severe epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention HIV/AIDS, which is considered an epidemic 'severe' when more than one percent of the population affected.

Washington DC is not the first city to distribute the female condom. New York City had previously promoted female condoms, to be exact since 1998. A group of people there handing out about 930 000 condoms, few know then.

Agency U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the female condom in 1993. FDA estimates that only 1-2% of women who only tried this contraceptive.

This happens because the original version of female condoms are not popular. Users complain about the price could reach U.S. $ 3.60 for a single condom. Another thing is to remind them condom raw materials by physician examination gloves, condoms and they worry it will wrinkle like plastic bags being used.

It happened about a year ago. But now the FDA approved a new version called FC2 condoms that. Female condom is made from synthetic materials Nitrile. The price is cheaper, or about U.S. $ 2 per condom. In addition, the female condom was not noisy when used.

However, it is more expensive than the traditional male condom. Many women see it the first time feel intimidated by the size of condoms, and feel uncomfortable with the idea of entering it into the vagina condom.

A female condom is as effective as male condoms in preventing pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. However, female condoms cover the 'territory' is more comprehensive and provide broader protection.

Condoms can be inserted up to eight hours before intercourse. And, most importantly, allows a woman to control the protection of her genitals.

Theresa Exner, a scientist who has conducted research on female condoms, said promoting the female condom can be tricky. Yet studies show that promoting female condom could increase the use of male condoms as a whole.

In Indonesia, the use of female condoms had been socialized in Papua, a few years ago. But until now not heard from again. [Mor]inilah.com
